Briefed to create a piece of signage that was also an art piece in itself to direct the public to a new gallery space in UAL’s HQ building in Holborn London.
Alphabetical devised a neon sign that seems to drip from a UAL branded paint tin – pointing passers-by to the entrance and giving them a taste of what’s in store for them.
Nabokov used to collect butterflies in butterfly boxes. This collection of covers is not only relevant to the content, but also generates a very usefull cover system while producing delicate and meaningful results.
Using the rich archive of the modern art museum, the identity for Moderna Museet borrows lettering by Robert Rauchenberg from a 1983 exhibition catalogue. The distinct signature works wonderfully on the wide format of the building and is combined with a bold wayfinding system used throughout the small island it is located on.
Cultural and historical awareness are woven into the DNA of any worthwhile product. There is value in re-examining what already exists, digging through the archives [a good library] and poring over the classics [don’t copy]. Truly understand what untapped potential do the materials, colours, functions, forms, and processes still hold. I am happy that many designers and manufacturers are reaching out to the skilled craftsmen of today [not hipsters] to explore the possibilities.
